THE COURAGE TO KNOW THYSELF

Okay over the next few days you will be introducing yourself in a ton of classes. Many will just be asking for your name, your major and, perhaps even, where you are from or what you would like to do with the rest of your life. By the end of it you might think you have a pretty good answer to the question "Who are you?" and to be honest, as you grow older, this "Cocktail Party" question will continue to haunt you. The only thing that will change is that they won't care about your major but will want to know what you do. Are you a doctor, a lawyer and so on. You will answer this question a million times in your life and it will seem easy to live up to the Greek adage KNOW THYSELF. You are simply "John Smith" from "USS Suburbia" who now practices child psychology and has 1 kid and a dog. Okay, this is a reasonable answer. You may know yourself but to my mind something seems amiss. I seem and suspect that I am whole lot more than this.

In any case, if you have gotten a google account and can post something to this comment. Please tell me something about yourself but not something typical. Tell me something that you think really reflects who you are, something personal or particular to only you. It could be embarrassing, strange, perhaps confessional but just don't pretend to do it and put something trivial. Really confess something. If you honestly do this then reflect on what it took for you to be so "crazy" as to post such a thing. What characteristic, what comportment to the post did you take?

Of course you are not required to do this but eh, I thought it would or could be a fun way to start this blog.

I will go first. I am Dr. Layne and when I was 14 I was arrested for stealing a ferret.

Cheers,
Danny

  1. Hi, I'm Phil, from Daphne, AL, and I like to collect mementos from seemingly insignificant moments so that I can hold on to memories of everything from the mundane to the extraordinary. Oh, and I put them all in a shoebox.

  13. I'm Ricki. I'm currently sitting at my dining room table about 30 miles west of New Orleans in Laplace.
I"ll never know why i was on the roof in the first place, but when i was 4 my sisters, Kaila (12) and Kourtney (10), decided to forgo ladders and lower me down cirque du soleil style. Kourtney's got me by the wrists; Kaila grasps my tiny toddler calves. "Alright! I've got her calves!"
    ::Wrists Released:: "AAH!" ::Fumble::
My head, then body kerplunks down onto the cement.
Those are now my best friends.

  14. Yoo... I'm Jonathan from Kenner, LA. It's like 30 minutes from here... Anyways, I'm a big anime fan (If you don't know what it's about, feel free to ask me), and I like to "window shop" online for anime merchandise. Sometimes the wish list gets up to $3,000. Yes, that is U.S. Dollars. There's a saying in the anime world:

Anime... Drugs would be cheaper. :D

  23. Hi, I'm Matthew, and despite my technological competence, I just was able to make my computer sign me in to this blog. Yay!
I'm from Lake Charles, which is usually a 4 hour drive away from NOLA, but if you're me, a 3 hour drive.
I'm a pescetarian (vegetarian + fish) partially in spite of my brother, and because... well thats about it actually.
I'm a music therapy major. Why you ask? Music is my passion, and I like understanding how the human mind works and the finding the cure to any ailments it might possess. Music has a certain dimension to it that heals the soul - something modern medicine can't even begin to touch. So essentially, you can say my purpose for getting this major AND my goal in life is to cure the broken human soul. I believe music is the only device that can do that (that was my little rant for the day.)
Oh ya, I'm pursuing a math minor too. Yay math!

  24. Hello,
I'm Madelaine and I'm from Rhode Island. When I meet new people I tell them to call me Maddy because most people usually mispronounce my name as "Madeline" or Madelin," but I love it when people use my full name. I'm a Jazz Studies major and sometimes I'm absolutely terrified of my future as a musician with an ultimately useless degree. But, I can't pure anything else because music is my passion and makes me happier than anything in the world.

  27. Hi, I'm also late, but I'm Charlotte from Warren and Howell MI. I spent the last year toggling between the two and I take a compass whenever I go far from home. When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher and an artist and a ninja and a writer. I still do, but now I want other things more.
